Because of years of solitude Kreacher hadn't bothered cleaning the Black family home for a long time and even when the Order of the Phoenix used it as a headquarters, he was rarely seen cleaning. He also had a habit of stealing items that reminded him of his loyalty to the Black family. Kreacher was also considered to be slightly mad, probably from being stuck in the Blacks house alone for so long.

Thestrals have fangs and possess a well-developed sense of smell, which will lead them to carrion and fresh blood. According to Hagrid, they will not attack a human-sized target without provocation. They are capable of very fast flight for several hours at a time, though they usually spend their time on the ground; and they have an excellent sense of direction. The portrayal of giants as a dying breed is consistent with much of European folklore, where they are frequently described as primaeval creatures who built ruins and created strange landforms long before humans arrived.
Black family
He is quite short, like all house-elves, coming only up to Harry’s navel (GF21). He is devoted to Harry Potter and also to Ron Weasley, who he refers to as Harry’s “Wheezy.” Dobby is particularly fond of socks and used his earnings to buy yarn and knit them himself (GF23). There are over a hundred house-elves at Hogwarts, the largest number in any dwelling in Britain (GF12). They lay the fires, do the laundry, light the lamps, and do countless other such tasks.
Basilisk
While Hermione believed all house-elves should be liberated, the house-elves themselves had known no other life, and Winky struggled deeply to adjust to her freedom. It is never explained how Regulus discovered that the Locket was a Horcrux. He also apparently never understood how to dispatch one, as he only directed Kreacher to take and destroy it, apparently assuming any strong magical charm would do the job. Harry has already learned, by means of Hermione's research, that there are only a few methods to destroy these Dark magical objects, and he must find some alternative means to eliminate Voldemort's Horcruxes. Like Regulus, Harry will likewise task someone (Neville Longbottom) to kill the last Horcrux in the event that he, Ron, or Hermione are unable to during the Battle at Hogwarts.
When Kreacher and Dobby returned from spying on Malfoy, Harry congratulated Dobby but ignored Kreacher. You are angry, you feel a strong loyalty to a situation long past and to people long dead. Harry finally won Kreacher over by giving him the fake locket from Regulus to keep as his own, and asking him to find Mundungus Fletcher, whom Kreacher had seen stealing the real locket as he trashed Grimmauld Place looking for things to sell. Kreacher returned with Mundungus who admitted the theft, but said Dolores Umbridge had taken the locket from him (DH11). After these events, Kreacher was much more kindly disposed towards Harry and his friends, cooking delicious food for them to eat, washing and ironing their clothes, and finally accepting Harry as his true master (DH12). While he assisted Regulus in trying to bring Voldemort down, this did not stop him from assisting the Dark Lord through Bellatrix and the Malfoys some fifteen years later.
Family connections/Affiliation
Kreacher was extremely devoted to all members of the Black family except Sirius Black, whom he hated. Sirius claimed that he was slightly less devoted to Sirius' father than he was to his mother but also said he caught him snogging a pair of his fathers old trousers. Considering Kreacher was disloyal to people who treated him in a horrible manner, the Black family must have treated him with kindness. After graduating from Hogwarts and moving to 12 Grimmauld Place, Harry Potter called Kreacher to return to work at the former home of their former masters.

Inside, they hunt for Slytherin's Locket for over an hour, but find nothing. Harry suspects Kreacher, the Black family House-elf who was continually retrieving discarded items, may have hidden it. The most well-known example of this in the English-speaking world is the Brownie, a small fairy-like creature who helps around a home in exchange for daily food and drink (in the form of hot milk, honey and gruel) but will depart forever if it is paid in human money.

Harry then gave Kreacher the fake Slytherin's Locket with the note from Regulus, saying Regulus would have wanted him to have it, as Kreacher adored having a Black family heirloom for himself. Kreacher eventually grew quite friendly towards Harry and company, especially after Harry gifted him the locket, and started cooking for them, cleaning the house, and reminding him to wash his hands before dinner, during their hideout there in 1997. Harry also congratulated him when he succeeded in capturing Mundungus Fletcher.

After the appointment of Kingsley Shacklebolt as Minister of Magic, dementors are removed from Azkaban, and the Ministry contains them by limiting their numbers. He had a few – let’s call it ‘curious’ – judgement issues (like that time he sent a jinxed Bludger after Harry during a Quidditch match), but he always meant well. Dobby initially served the Malfoy family but was set free when Harry tricked Lucius Malfoy into giving him a sock. ’Dobby has no master… Dobby is a free elf,’ he told Bellatrix, shortly before his demise in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Kreacher is an aged old house-elf whose ancestors have served the family of the Blacks for centuries. He is nasty and rude to the current inhabitants of the house, number twelve Grimmauld Place, and doesn’t do much actual upkeep. He is devoted to the mother of Sirius Black, who died in 1985 [Y5] but whose portrait still shrieks orders from the wall of the front hall of the house. Kreacher tried to stop the members of the Order of the Phoenix from throwing away the many dark magic items with which 12 Grimmauld Place was filled, even going so far as to rescue some of them, which might be very important later (OP4, OP6, OP9, OP23). When accidentally given leave by Sirius, Kreacher went to the home of a family relation, the Malfoys. There he gave much away about Sirius and the Order (OP22, OP24, OP32, OP37).
Griphook is a goblin and an employee at Gringotts until the Second Wizarding War. He is not heard of again until Deathly Hallows, when the Snatchers holding him captive also capture Harry, Ron, and Hermione. When Hermione lies under torture to Bellatrix Lestrange that the sword of Gryffindor is a fake, Bellatrix asks Griphook for confirmation, which she receives. He is saved, along with Harry, Ron, and Hermione, by Dobby and successfully escapes to Shell Cottage.
The basilisk itself flees only from the crowing of a rooster, which if heard by the basilisk is fatal, and the weasel whose odor will also kill a basilisk. Below is a list of magical creatures mentioned in the Harry Potter universe. For a list of magical plants mentioned in the series, see List of fictional plants. At first, Harry disliked Kreacher too – because that’s what Sirius felt – and then came to hate the house-elf after he contributed to Sirius’s death. But as time went on, and after Harry became Kreacher’s master, the relationship between the two changed.
In an interview, Rowling stated this was to symbolise the loss of Dumbledore. When asked why Fawkes did not return to Harry due to his loyalty to Dumbledore, Rowling stated that Fawkes was non-transferable between owners. During the confrontation between Voldemort and Dumbledore in the Ministry of Magic at the climax of Order of the Phoenix (book only), Fawkes saves Dumbledore's life by swallowing a Killing Curse from Voldemort, then bursts into flame and is reborn as a chick from the ashes. Dobby also quickly becomes the only house-elf who will clean the Gryffindor common room, when Hermione leaves knitted clothing half-hidden around the room in an attempt to free the elves, which they find insulting. He also helps Harry get through the second task of the Triwizard Tournament by giving him Gillyweed.
Kreacher’s nature has been so twisted by the environment that nurtured him that ‘his life’s ambition is to have his head cut off and stuck up on a plaque just like his mother’, as Ron says. Kreacher called them 'Miss Cissy' and 'Miss Bella' and in 1997, when Harry, Ron and Hermione were staying in Grimmauld Place , Hermione immediately realised that Kreacher was very fond of them. She told Harry and Ron that since 'Miss Cissy' and 'Miss Bella' must have been lovely to him, Kreacher must have been willing to do a job for them, especially against Sirius, the man who treated him horribly. It is unknown if he continued to work in the Hogwarts kitchens or entered the service of the Potter family, or possibly both. Kreacher's joy at being given a Black family "heirloom" as his own caused him to drastically change his view of Harry.
In fact, Winky was so traumatised by the turn her life took that she even started drinking. Her Butterbeer addiction haunted her life, but she still gathered the strength to join bravely in the Battle of Hogwarts. As the reader later discovered, it was Barty Crouch Jr, while under Winky’s care, who cast the Dark Mark.
